About Braquo the Complete season 1
Braquo the Complete season 1 info:
“Braquo” is a French slang word, apparently originating from the suburbs of Paris, which means a particularly violent heist. There are two reasons why it’s the perfect title for the French cop thriller series. First, the show is not for the faint-hearted. It begins with a police officer ramming a biro into the eye of a rape suspect and continues at the same level. But, more importantly, it sums up its unvarnished realism. We are voyeurs, peeking through a window into this story, slang slung at us with an insouciant shrug along with a refreshing lack of glamour, humour or sparkle.
In the first episode, a cop commits suicide after being unfairly blamed in a sensitive case. His four best friends and colleagues in the Hauts-de-Seine's district police department set out to clear his name. Sounds worthy? Well, to get there, they’re not afraid of breaking laws they’re supposed to enforce. It’s a good cop/bad cop situation from the off, with our gang often using extremely violent and illegal methods to achieve justice.
Some have called Braquo France’s answer to The Wire or The Shield. Like the Baltimore drama, it is written by ex-cop Oliver Marchal which brings a frisson of realism to the tale. Perhaps this is why his characters are believable. The four are led by older heartthrob Eddy Caplan, played by Jean-Hugues Anglade (Nikita). Caplan is the classic flawed hero. He lives to clear his best friend’s reputation, but behaves rather ambiguously towards his widow. But he’s kind-hearted, tough and sharp as a needle and there’s always a delicious pleasure in siding with the cops who are up to no good, even if people get killed in the process.
Roxanne Delgado, the only girl in Caplan’s quartet, is a shrewd, achingly cool badass. She chain-smokes and snarls with her make-up free face and leather bomber jacket, though we later see her personal tragedies. Tho Wachevski is a coke-snorting, tattooed womaniser whose febrile passion can get him into trouble. Walter Morlighem looks like a typical thug but he’s gentle and sweet, especially with his children. They’re set against Roland Vogel, a snake of a baddie with weak morals and a terrifying peroxide bowl cut.
Braquo is as French as a bowl of snails. The suburbs look grey, drizzly, dank and depressing. Everyone smokes as if they’re on the edge of an existential crisis. And don’t expect any laughs; the occasional jokes stink.
